Aliko Dangote to Donate One-Third of Wealth to Charity
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has announced that 33 percent of his estimated $35.1 billion fortune will be given to charitable causes. The plan, disclosed by his daughter and foundation trustee Halima Dangote in a Bloomberg interview, is part of a family succession strategy and will amount to roughly $11.6‑$11.7 billion if his net worth remains unchanged.
The donation builds on the Aliko Dangote Foundation, created in 1994, which was initially endowed with $1.25 billion and later received an additional $700 million. The foundation spends about 70 percent of its resources in Nigeria, 20 percent across Africa and the remaining share on projects elsewhere. Dangote has already transferred 25 percent of his wealth to the foundation and, according to Islamic inheritance rules, the new arrangement brings the total charitable commitment to one‑third of his estate. Halima said the decision was signed off by Dangote’s two daughters and his mother, ensuring the pledge endures for future generations.
