Alipay+ and S&P Global report gaps in cross-border digital commerce

A joint study by Alipay+ and S&P Global reveals a significant gap between consumer digital expectations and the reality of cross-border commerce. Based on a survey of 6,000 consumers across nine markets in Asia, Europe, and the USA, the research highlights that while e-wallets and AI are becoming foundational to global trade, several hurdles remain.

Key findings indicate that 53 percent of consumers are uncertain if their payment methods will be accepted by foreign merchants, and 54 percent cannot always use their preferred payment type for travel bookings. Consequently, one in four travelers still carries cash as a backup. Consumers are increasingly looking for payment apps to offer expanded services, such as restaurant reservations, integrated travel bookings, and attraction ticketing.

Regarding artificial intelligence, 81 percent of respondents already use AI tools for travel research and planning. However, there is significant hesitation regarding AI making autonomous payments or decisions. Data privacy remains a major concern, with 43 percent of participants expressing worries about data protection, suggesting that security and transparency are essential for the growth of AI-driven commerce.
