Before his disappearance, Rizai was involved in a shooting incident at a beach bar in Anavyssos. Following a dispute over loud music, a confrontation occurred involving firearms. A 27-year-old Afghan security guard was arrested for allegedly attempting to cause fatal injuries during the incident, which resulted in minor injuries to two bystanders.

Witnesses reported that Rizai used a black Mercedes SUV, which appeared to be modified with a police-style beacon and a loudspeaker, to impersonate a law enforcement officer. While police located Rizai's vehicle, they reported that they did not find a beacon or similar equipment inside.
