All Kids Bike brings cycling curriculum to U.S. elementary schools
The nonprofit program All Kids Bike has introduced a learn-to-ride curriculum into nearly 2,000 elementary schools across the United States. The initiative incorporates bicycle training into physical education classes, allowing children to learn in controlled environments such as school gyms and playgrounds.
At Terra Vista Elementary School in Rancho Cucamonga, California, kindergarteners use black-and-white balance bikes to practice gliding and steering on paths marked by traffic cones. The eight-lesson curriculum begins with students becoming comfortable on pedal-free bikes before progressing to full cycling with pedals.
To support the program, the city of Rancho Cucamonga provided $45,000 to fund equipment and curriculum for Terra Vista and four other local schools. The program aims to provide cycling opportunities to children who may lack access to instruction through family or neighborhood resources.
