Allahabad High Court Flags Delay in Uttar Pradesh Panchayat Elections

The Allahabad High Court bench, comprising Justices Rajan Roy and Manjive Shukla, expressed concern over the postponement of Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh. Hearing a public‑interest litigation filed by Sanjay Kumar Sharma, the court urged the state government to begin election preparations at least two years before the five‑year term of local bodies expires, as mandated by Article 243‑E of the Constitution.

The court noted that although the election process was initiated in May 2025, it could not be completed before the constitutional deadline of 26 May 2026. It ordered the state to produce relevant records for further scrutiny and scheduled the next hearing for 11 August, aiming to determine whether the delay stemmed from unavoidable circumstances or administrative failure.
