Allahabad High Court quashes NSA detention of student activist

The Allahabad High Court has quashed the detention order issued under the National Security Act (NSA) against Akriti Chaudhary, a social activist and student at the University of Delhi. The court, led by Justices Atul Sreedharan and Achal Sachdev, criticized the state government's justification for her detention, describing it as a ‘fabricated story’.

Chaudhary had been detained in connection with violent protests involving laborers in Noida. However, the court noted discrepancies in the timeline, observing that the violence reported by the state occurred after her initial arrest, making it difficult to hold her responsible for subsequent unrest. The bench also questioned whether proper legal notices were issued prior to her arrest.

In a significant ruling regarding administrative accountability, the court ordered a compensation of 5 lakh rupees to be paid to Chaudhary. The court directed that this amount be recovered from the salary of the Noida District Magistrate, Medha Roopam.
