Allen residents to vote in referendum on Mayor Marcelo Román

Citizens of Allen, in the Río Negro province, will vote in a referendum on November 8 to decide whether Mayor Marcelo Román should remain in office. The Allen City Council approved the referendum by a vote of six to three, marking the final stage of a mandate revocation process.

The initiative follows the verification of 4,771 valid signatures, exceeding the 20% threshold of the 2023 electoral roll required by the Municipal Organic Charter. The process began in May after an initial collection of signatures surpassed the 10% requirement.

Román, a member of the La Libertad Avanza party, faces criminal charges for alleged fraudulent administration and embezzlement. The legal proceedings involve allegations of misconduct alongside businessman Sebastián Ocampo. While the City Council had previously attempted to preemptively suspend the mayor in July, that decision was overturned in August by the Superior Court of Justice of Río Negro, which ruled the Council lacked the competence to apply such a measure under those specific conditions.
