Allergists identify common habits worsening morning allergy symptoms
Medical experts warn that seasonal changes and specific household habits can intensify allergy and asthma symptoms, particularly during the autumn months. Increased concentrations of weed pollen, such as ragweed, and mold spores often lead to heightened reactions starting as early as mid-August.
Allergists Dr. Meagan Shepherd and Dr. Stephanie Kayode note that symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes can significantly disrupt sleep quality. Morning symptoms are often particularly severe due to prolonged exposure to allergens in the bedroom.
Key contributors to morning discomfort include dust mites accumulating in mattresses, pillows, and bedding, as well as dander from pets that sleep in the bed. Experts emphasize that irregular washing of bed linens allows dust and mites to build up, leading to direct contact with allergens for six to nine hours every night.
