Allgäu and Heilbronn among Germany’s most attractive regions for living

The Allgäu region in southern Germany is promoted for its wide range of leisure activities, family‑friendly amenities and educational opportunities, making it an appealing place to relocate away from large cities. Highlights include outdoor attractions such as the Alps, lakes and castles, as well as vocational and university options in Kempten.

A separate study by the Institute of the German Economy (IW) shows that Heilbronn tops the national ranking for price‑adjusted income, with a real per‑capita income of €39,424 in 2023. Although Starnberg records the highest nominal salaries, its high cost of living lowers its purchasing‑power ranking. The IW analysis indicates that many of the top‑ranked areas are rural rather than major urban centres, underscoring the impact of local price levels on residents’ real purchasing power.
