Allgäu region prepares for small-scale Viehscheid cattle drives in 2026

The Allgäu region in Germany features several small-scale cattle drives, known as Viehscheid, scheduled for the 2026 season. These traditional events mark the return of livestock from alpine pastures to the valleys.

In Memhölz (Waltenhofen), the event is set for October 3, 2026. It is noted for being a small-scale drive involving approximately 30 to 50 animals, including cattle, goats, ponies, and calves, making it particularly popular with families. Local musical groups and brass players typically provide entertainment.

Other small Viehscheid events in 2026 include Unterjoch on September 14, where up to 60 young cattle from the Buchelalpe are expected, and Wengen on September 19, which features around 100 young cattle and a local farmers' market. These smaller gatherings are characterized by their intimate and family-friendly atmosphere compared to larger regional drives.
