Sahel states reject Tinubu’s claims regarding Nigeria’s security crisis

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has sparked diplomatic tension by attributing the rise in kidnappings and terrorist attacks within Nigeria to the security collapse in the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), specifically naming Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. During a meeting with traditional leaders, Tinubu suggested that some terrorists are not Nigerian and that instability in neighboring Sahel nations is exacerbating Nigeria’s security difficulties.

The AES nations have formally rejected these claims. Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, expressed the AES’s ‘deep regret’ regarding the remarks, describing them as ‘inaccurate and incompatible’ with the spirit of solidarity required among neighbors facing shared terrorist threats. The response suggests that the Sahel states view Tinubu’s comments as an attempt to shift blame for Nigeria’s internal security challenges onto neighboring countries.

In a separate address at the International Conference on Security and National Unity, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of national unity and dialogue to overcome internal differences. He stated that the government remains committed to addressing security challenges and promoting peace through international collaboration.
