Allianz Partners warns of high medical costs for international travelers
Allianz Partners has highlighted the high financial risks associated with medical emergencies during international travel, citing specific cases involving Polish tourists. In one instance, a 56-year-old woman in the United States required three days of intensive care following a head injury, resulting in costs exceeding 370,000 PLN. In another case, a 50-year-old man in Mexico incurred total expenses of over 170,000 PLN for ankle surgery, ambulance transport, and medical flight arrangements.
The insurer noted that the highest single claim handled recently, related to a stay in Peru, exceeded 1.1 million PLN. These incidents occur amid a significant rise in travel interest; data from Kiwi.com indicates that Polish travelers planning trips between September and November 2026 have seen a 43.1% year-over-year increase in planned trips and a 51.5% increase in bookings.
Experts suggest that for long-distance travel, insurance coverage must go beyond basic presence. Key considerations should include the total sum of medical coverage, financing rules, medical transport organization, and the scope of assistance services.
