Nigeria political leaders sign 2027 election peace accord

Political leaders and parties in Nigeria have signed the first National Peace Accord for the 2027 general elections in Abuja. The agreement, organized by the National Peace Committee in partnership with The Kukah Centre, pledges to promote issue-based campaigns and shun violence, hate speech, and misinformation.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, issued warnings against ‘do-or-die’ politics and the use of artificial intelligence to spread disinformation. Other signatories included presidential candidates Peter Obi and Adewale Adebayo. The National Peace Committee announced it will deploy an Election Security Information Hub to monitor compliance and track political violence.

In related developments, President Tinubu has directed the immediate preparation of a National Threat Assessment and a five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan to improve coordination among security agencies. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) projects that the registered voting population will exceed 100 million for the 2027 polls, which are scheduled to begin on January 16, 2027.
