Alligator Attack in Florida Kills California Woman

Brittany Clark, a 31‑year‑old from Sacramento, California, was killed on June 28 when a large alligator attacked her while she was swimming in the Econlockhatchee River near the Little Big Econ State Forest in Seminole County, Florida. The reptile, estimated at about 13 feet long, seized both of Clark's arms and performed a “death roll,” causing fatal injuries. Her boyfriend, Chance Allison, and friend, Jayden Hernandez, attempted a rescue; Allison later performed CPR while calling 911. Clark died en route to the hospital.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officials located and euthanized two alligators – one 13 feet and another 12½ feet – in the vicinity. The incident coincided with the end of the alligator breeding season and a severe drought that had lowered river levels, making the animals more territorial. It was the first fatal alligator attack recorded in Seminole County and the 33rd in Florida since 1948.

Clark's family described the death as a “completely bizarre accident” and are seeking funds to return her remains to California. Her boyfriend recalled, “She loved her job… never in a million years would we have seen this nightmare come about,” while her brother described being “in shambles.” The event has sparked calls for clearer signage and warnings in natural areas where wildlife is present.
