Alligator discovered in Florida sewer system by inspection robot

A 1.5-meter American alligator was discovered inside a sewer pipe in Oviedo, Florida, during a routine infrastructure inspection. The Oviedo public works team deployed a four-wheeled robot equipped with a camera to investigate potholes on Lockwood Boulevard and check for potential leaks or breaks in the underground system.

The robot's lighting revealed the reptile, which adopted a defensive posture and opened its mouth before retreating further into the pipe. The inspection equipment eventually became stuck in a depression within the tubing. Local officials believe the alligator likely entered the network through storm ponds that are part of the city's flood prevention system.

Research from the University of Florida supports the occurrence of such sightings. A study published in the journal Urban Naturalist documented 50 instances of alligators in underground networks in Alachua County, noting that animals often use these pipes to navigate between ponds safely, avoiding roads and highways.
