Alligator sighting in Rio Bravo triggers border alerts

A large alligator has been spotted in the Rio Bravo near the border of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, and the United States, prompting safety alerts for residents and migrants. The reptile was observed approximately 400 meters upstream from Isla del Mudo, an area frequently used by people for recreational activities and by migrants crossing from Piedras Negras toward Eagle Pass.

During one sighting, the alligator reportedly changed direction and swam toward a group of people attempting to cross the river. While no injuries were reported, the U.S. Border Patrol notified Mexican authorities and recommended the installation of warning signs along the riverbanks to alert the public.

Civil Protection has issued a preventive alert, urging the population to avoid the riverbanks, refrain from entering the water, and stay away from the animal. Security and rescue agencies from both sides of the border have activated protocols to locate, safely capture, and relocate the predator.
