Allwyn UK interim CEO appointment sparks parliamentary scrutiny

Phil Walker has been appointed as the interim CEO of Allwyn UK, the operator of Britain’s National Lottery, succeeding Andria Vidler. Walker is scheduled to officially assume the role on September 7.

The appointment has drawn scrutiny from Members of Parliament, including Dawn Butler and Iain Duncan Smith, who have formally requested that the Gambling Commission review Walker’s suitability. Concerns center on his extensive background in the gambling industry, specifically his previous senior roles at William Hill and his position on the board of Game Nation, an adult gaming centre operator.

Critics point to a previous £19.2 million fine imposed on William Hill for social responsibility and anti-money laundering violations during Walker's tenure there. In response to the new role, Walker will step down from his board position at Game Nation. The controversy arrives amid shifting UK government policy aimed at granting local councils more authority to regulate betting and gaming venues.
