Ally Financial outlines ways for parents to build children's credit
Ally Financial has outlined strategies for parents to help establish a strong credit foundation for their children before they reach adulthood. Establishing early credit history can lead to long-term benefits, such as lower interest rates on loans, a wider selection of credit card options, higher credit limits, and improved success with rental applications.
While most credit card issuers require individuals to be at least 18 years old to be a primary account holder, parents can begin the process earlier by adding a child as an authorized user. As an authorized user, the child can receive a card to make purchases, but the primary account holder remains legally responsible for the balance. This method allows a child to begin building a credit history well before they are eligible to apply for credit independently.
