Águeda arson suspect detained for multiple forest fires

The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has detained a 49-year-old man suspected of causing multiple forest fires in the Águeda municipality. The most recent incident occurred on the evening of September 7 in Serém de Cima, involving a large forested area near several residential buildings.

Investigators believe the suspect used a “direct flame” method and may be responsible for several other ignitions in the same vicinity throughout the year, noting a consistent modus operandi. While no clear motive has been established, authorities suggest the suspect's actions may be linked to a “possible framework of alcoholism and a strong compulsivity” to commit such crimes.

The fire in Serém de Cima was prevented from reaching more serious proportions due to immediate alerts and rapid firefighting efforts. The suspect, who lives near the sites of the fires, will face a judicial interrogation in Aveiro to determine necessary coercive measures.
