Almagro Classical Theatre Festival 2026 Highlights Historic Play and Scholarly Sessions

The 49th edition of the International Classical Theatre Festival in Almagro, Spain, took place in July 2026. The festival presented the newly staged comedy "Quien calla, otorga", a sequel to Tirso de Molina’s 1614 work, adapted to an 1980s setting by the Compañía Diéresis. Directed by Ares Blanco, the production featured actors such as Jorge Eliseo, Mar Calvo and Blanca Carrillo, and received praise for its metatheatrical opening and vibrant period styling.

Alongside the performances, the festival hosted the Jornadas de Teatro Clásico, a three‑day academic programme organized by the University of Castilla‑La Mancha. The sessions marked the 40th anniversary of the National Classical Theatre Company, reviewing four decades of its work and discussing the digitisation of Golden Age archives. Scholars, directors and actors convened to debate the evolution of classical verse and strategies for attracting new audiences, underscoring the festival’s role as both a cultural showcase and a research hub.
