The Spanish government has extended the operating license for the Almaraz nuclear power plant until June 2030. This decision moves the previous closure dates for its two reactors from 2027 and 2028 to the new 2030 deadline.

Despite this extension, the government is continuing its preparations for the plant's eventual decommissioning. Enresa, the public company responsible for managing radioactive waste and plant demolition, has already awarded a 27.4 million euro contract to develop the engineering designs and documentation required for the dismantling process.

Shareholders of the plant, including Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy, requested the extension specifically until 2030. Both Iberdrola and Endesa have indicated intentions to seek similar extensions for other nuclear plants scheduled for closure between 2030 and 2035. The Ministry for Ecological Transition maintains that the Almaraz extension does not alter the national goal of a total nuclear phase-out in Spain by 2035.
