Almaraz nuclear plant operating license extended to 2030
The Spanish government has authorized an extension of the operating license for the Almaraz nuclear power plant until June 2030. This decision delays the previously scheduled closure of the plant's two reactors, which were set to shut down in 2027 and 2028.
Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen clarified in Congress that this extension is exclusively for Almaraz and does not establish a precedent for other nuclear facilities. She emphasized that the broader energy policy remains unchanged and the scheduled total nuclear shutdown, concluding with the Trillo plant, is still set for 2035.
The government cited current energy market uncertainty and international instability as the primary reasons for the extension. While major electricity companies have sought longer lifespans for other plants, the administration maintains that the existing closure calendar for the rest of the nuclear fleet will be respected.
