Almeirim plans construction of 566 new homes by 2036

The Municipality of Almeirim has approved a Municipal Housing Charter aiming to construct 566 new homes by 2036. Of these, 306 will be directly promoted by the local government, while 260 will be developed through partnerships with the social sector, housing cooperatives, and construction companies.

The plan follows a local diagnosis identifying 133 cases of substandard housing conditions and 166 new requests for support. The strategy seeks to provide housing for between 220 and 340 households requiring supported housing, and between 430 and 690 households in the affordable housing category. Additionally, the charter includes the creation of “casas de função” (service houses) for public sector professionals.

This new document expands upon the 2021 Local Housing Strategy by extending the timeline to 2036 and broadening its scope to include middle-income families who struggle with the current housing market. The charter establishes interim goals for 2026, 2030, and 2036, and will now move to the Municipal Assembly for discussion and voting.
