Chile grants parole to ex-police captain who blinded Senator Campillai

The Conditional Release Commission of Talca has unanimously granted parole to Patricio Maturana Ojeda, a former Carabineros captain. Maturana is serving a sentence of 12 years and 183 days for an attack during the 2019 social unrest in Chile that resulted in the permanent loss of sight, taste, and smell for Senator Fabiola Campillai.

The benefit is set to take effect on December 2, 2026, when Maturana reaches the legal minimum requirement for conditional release. The decision follows a favorable psychosocial report from Gendarmería, which assessed his risk of recidivism as “very low” and noted his acceptance of responsibility.

Senator Campillai has expressed strong opposition to the decision, labeling it an “act of impunity.” She argued that Maturana has never cooperated with justice or expressed public remorse for the irreparable damage caused. Campillai stated she intends to pursue all legal and international avenues to challenge the ruling, emphasizing that those responsible for human rights violations should not receive such benefits.
