Almería faces grid capacity issues despite high solar potential

The province of Almería, Spain, possesses ideal conditions for photovoltaic energy due to its arid landscape and high number of annual sunshine hours. As of June 30, 2026, the province has 1,742.9 MW of installed renewable power, with 1,220 MW coming from solar sources. This represents a significant increase from the 285.9 MW recorded in 2021.

Despite this potential, the region faces a critical bottleneck: the electrical grid lacks the capacity to evacuate the electricity generated. While many large-scale projects are in development—including 25 photovoltaic plants that would add 842 MW—the ability to inject power into the system is limited by technical constraints. Red Eléctrica manages connection access based on grid security and capacity studies, but the current infrastructure struggles to handle the volume of production, making energy evacuation a major challenge for developers.
