Almería farmers face critical Thrips parvispinus infestation

Agricultural organizations in Almería, Spain, have issued an urgent warning regarding a widespread infestation of the pest Thrips parvispinus. According to the Coordinator of Farmers and Livestock Organizations (COAG), the pest is currently affecting 100% of the pepper crops in the province and is beginning to spread to cucumber crops.

Farmers are calling for immediate government intervention, including the authorization of active substances used in other European Union countries and the simplification of administrative procedures for pest control. COAG noted that growers are facing significant additional costs for biological control measures without seeing positive results.

In addition to the phytosanitary crisis, agricultural groups are demanding solutions for water scarcity, theft on farms, and delays in storm-related aid. Specific demands include accelerating desalination infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of the Campo de Dalías plant and the production of the Bajo Almanzora I plant.
