Almería football club's failed promotion shows modest economic impact

Unión Deportiva Almería missed out on promotion to Spain's Primera División after a 2-1 loss to Málaga CF in the playoff second leg. Media headlines warned of a €71 million loss for the province, but a detailed Chamber of Commerce report revealed that visitor spending accounted for only 15 % of the projected €70.9 million direct impact. Local residents generated the bulk of the €5.2 million consumption linked to match days, and most of the projected revenue came from TV rights and sponsorships rather than tourism. The analysis concluded that the missed promotion would likely result in a modest net saving for Almería households rather than a financial disaster.

The report highlighted that the anticipated influx of roughly 500 visiting fans per match would have produced about €692 000 in total visitor spending, while the estimated €4.44 million direct impact from local spending made up 84 % of the overall figure. Indirect benefits, such as increased club operating budgets and advertising value, were largely theoretical and did not translate into immediate economic gains for the region.
