Almería leads Andalusian agro-food exports amid pest and security concerns

Almería has established itself as the primary economic driver for agro-food sales in Andalusia. During the first half of 2026, producers in the province exported over 1.7 million tons of products, generating nearly 3.059 billion euros in revenue. This represents approximately one-third of the total export value for the entire Andalusian community.

Key drivers of this growth include the horticultural sector, specifically fresh vegetables and legumes. Cucumber sales saw an increase of over 20%, while extra virgin olive oil remains a major regional product despite production challenges.

However, the agricultural sector in El Ejido faces significant operational hurdles. Local authorities and ASAJA Almería have met to address the emergence of the Thrips parvispinus pest, which is threatening new crops. The organization is calling for coordinated prevention and cleaning protocols around greenhouses to contain the infestation.

Additionally, farmers are reporting ongoing concerns regarding theft and robbery on agricultural holdings. In response, the El Ejido City Council has implemented a special Local Police device to increase surveillance in affected rural areas.
