Almería officials demand urgent railway improvements and investment

Authorities in Almería and the Junta de Andalucía are raising alarms regarding the deteriorating state of railway infrastructure and regional connectivity. The Almería City Council is set to debate initiatives to demand the immediate restoration of the Intercity train service to Madrid, which was suspended in September due to network remodeling. Local officials are also calling for a global plan from the Ministry of Transport and Renfe to protect conventional rail lines and to establish public service obligations for flights between Almería and Madrid to regulate fares and schedules.

Simultaneously, the Junta de Andalucía’s Minister of Development and Mobility, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, has criticized the central government for a lack of investment and communication. He noted that formal requests made since 2019 to address deficiencies in commuter, medium-distance, and high-speed lines have gone unanswered. This lack of investment is reportedly causing service degradation despite an increase in train convoys.

In a separate urban development effort, the Almería City Council has drafted a preliminary project to transform the historic old railway station into a cultural and tourist hub. The proposal, to be presented to Adif, aims to repurpose the building into exhibition spaces, a railway interpretation center, and multipurpose rooms while preserving its architectural heritage.
