Almería overtakes Morocco as top EU watermelon supplier

From January to May 2026 the Spanish province of Almería exported 96.68 million kg of watermelons to the European Union, representing 23.06 % of the EU’s total imports for that period. The shipment was valued at €98.05 million, with an average price of €1.01 per kilogram. Almería’s volume has risen 29.08 % over the past five years, with sales concentrating in May (77.97 million kg).

Morocco’s EU deliveries fell sharply, totaling 79.72 million kg (19.02 % of the market) – a 43.9 % drop compared with the same months in 2022 – and were valued at €98.29 million, at €1.23 per kilogram. Brazil supplied 44.32 million kg, accounting for 10.57 % of EU imports.

The data, compiled from ESTACOM (ICEX‑Tax Agency) and EUROESTACOM (ICEX‑Eurostat), highlight Almería’s growing share of the EU watermelon market and a notable decline in Moroccan shipments.
