Spain legal updates: Residency fraud ring and various criminal prosecutions
In Almería, Spain, the Prosecutor's Office is seeking prison sentences for a criminal network accused of orchestrating a scheme to obtain residency permits for Moroccan women through simulated gender-based violence. Between 2017 and 2019, the group allegedly organized fake assaults in public areas, where men would physically attack women to trigger rapid judicial proceedings. These convictions were then used to secure exceptional residency authorizations. The prosecution is targeting approximately 30 individuals, including a primary organizer.
Separately, in Ceuta, a 22-year-old Moroccan national has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, a penalty substituted by a five-year expulsion from Spanish territory, after throwing stones at a National Police officer during an identification check at Almadraba beach.
In other legal developments, the Prosecutor's Office in Almería has raised concerns regarding the premature granting of semi-liberty status to high-risk inmates. Additionally, in Formentera, a prosecutor is seeking six years in prison for a boat captain after a 32-hour journey involving 14 people on an undersized vessel that ran out of fuel twice.
In Pamplona, a man of Maghrebi origin has been placed in provisional detention for an attempted robbery and attempted homicide involving a knife and strangulation at a campsite.
