Almería railway connectivity faces challenges amid high-speed rail works

The province of Almería is facing significant railway connectivity challenges as it awaits the integration of high-speed rail through the Mediterranean Corridor. While current construction works are intended to eventually connect the region to the broader Spanish and European networks, they are causing immediate disruptions to existing services.

Local advocacy groups, such as the Mesa del Ferrocarril de Almería, have expressed frustration over what they describe as railway abandonment. Current travel times are notably long, with trips to Granada taking three hours for 150 kilometers and journeys to Seville requiring transfers that extend travel to six and a half hours.

Concerns are mounting regarding the reduction of direct services to Madrid. The Talgo VI service is expected to cease operations this September due to construction works at Despeñaperros, leaving travelers with even fewer options. While supporters of the infrastructure projects argue that these inconveniences are necessary steps toward long-term modernization, local citizens are demanding more immediate solutions to address the current lack of efficient mobility.
