Almería services face disruption from school protests and cleaning strikes

Public services in Almería face disruptions as various educational and municipal sectors announce protests and strikes.

In Cuevas del Almanzora, parent associations from IES El Jaroso and 11 primary schools have called for a demonstration to demand ‘dignified conditions’ for students. The protest addresses severe overcrowding at IES El Jaroso, where nearly 1,300 students are enrolled in a facility built for 500. Currently, some vocational training courses are being held in the lower levels of the Plaza de Abastos due to a lack of available classroom space. The community is calling for the expedited construction of a new institute.

Simultaneously, an indefinite strike by over 200 cleaning workers managed by FCC is set to begin, affecting public schools, sports centers, and municipal buildings in Almería. Workers cite chronic staff shortages, lack of replacements for medical leaves, excessive workloads, and declining purchasing power as primary grievances. The workforce is demanding that the Almería City Council take a more active role in supervising the private contractor to ensure essential hygiene standards are met.
