Spain's Andalusia wildfire kills 12, forces 1,450 evacuations

A forest fire that broke out near Los Gallardos in the province of Almería, Andalusia, has killed 12 people, injured eight and left about 1,450 residents evacuated from Los Gallardos, Bédar, Antas and surrounding villages. The blaze has burned roughly 6,600 ha of forest and scrub, and authorities suspect a fallen electrical line as the likely ignition source. More than 500 firefighters, 200 members of the military emergency unit (UME) and several aerial assets have been deployed, with containment improving after weak winds and higher humidity created a "window of opportunity" for direct attack. Search teams continue to look for an estimated 20‑23 missing persons, most of whom are believed to be foreign tourists; seven formal disappearance reports have been filed. Two people were arrested for re‑entering the exclusion zone. Evacuees have been housed in emergency centres, hotels and temporary shelters, and many are awaiting the return of their pets. The regional government has begun forensic identification of the victims and is coordinating additional resources to fully extinguish remaining hotspots.
