Matthew Brennan wins third La Vuelta stage in Cartagena-Lorca sprint
Matthew Brennan of Visma | Lease a Bike secured his third stage victory of the Vuelta a España during Stage 11, a 153.8-kilometer route from Cartagena to Lorca. The 21-year-old British sprinter won the mass sprint, narrowly beating Bryan Coquard of Cofidis and Jordi Meeus of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe. Brennan’s victory was supported by a strong lead-out from his team, including Wout van Aert, who finished fifth.
In the general classification, Enric Mas of Movistar maintains the red jersey, holding a 1 minute and 18 second lead over Primoz Roglic. Felix Gall remains in third place. The race now transitions to more challenging mountainous terrain, with Stage 12 set to climb from Vera to Calar Alto.
The stage also served as a significant promotional event for Cartagena. The city hosted the start of the stage for the second time in three years, utilizing the international broadcast—reaching 190 countries—to promote its historical heritage and tourism. Additionally, Cartagena received the ‘Más Bici 2026’ seal for its cycling-friendly municipal policies.
