Spain records three femicide killings in 24 hours, prompting national outcry

Three women were killed in separate incidents within 24 hours across Spain. In Alameda de la Sagra (Toledo), a 45‑year‑old woman was stabbed to death by her 48‑year‑old husband, who was arrested after the son called emergency services. In Antequera (Málaga), 30‑year‑old María was stabbed multiple times by her 35‑year‑old ex‑partner, who later jumped from a wall. In Benahavís (Málaga), a 45‑year‑old Hungarian woman was found dead with a neck wound; investigators have identified a suspect who knew the victim but is not a partner, and the case is currently being examined as a non‑gender‑based homicide.

The spate raises the 2026 femicide toll to 31 and leaves six children orphaned. The national government responded: Equality Minister Ana Redondo called for "the unity and strength of all Spain" against a "wave of machist terrorism"; Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed solidarity and announced a crisis committee; the Castilla‑La Mancha regional government condemned the crimes and pledged legal action. Trade union CCOO and other groups also condemned the murders and demanded stronger protection measures. Resources such as the 016 helpline and regional support services were highlighted.

Authorities continue investigations, with the Benahavís case possibly not classified as gender‑based violence, while the other two murders have been officially recorded as femicide.
