Spain records spate of gender‑based murders, three women killed in 24 hours

In the space of 24 hours, three women were killed in Spain – a 30‑year‑old in Antequera (Málaga), a 45‑year‑old in Alameda de la Sagra (Toledo) and a 45‑year‑old in Benahavís (Málaga). The murders in Antequera and Alameda de la Sagra have been classified as gender‑based violence, while investigators are still assessing whether the Benahavís case also fits that definition.

The Ministry of Equality confirmed the two gender‑based killings, raising the national total of victims to 31 for 2026 and noting six minors now orphaned. The government has convened a crisis committee and called for a minute of silence in the affected towns. Minister Ana Redondo urged “the union and strength of all Spain” to combat the “wave of machista terrorism”, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation as “an unbearable tragedy”.

Authorities continue to search for a suspect in the Benahavís case, where a foreign‑born victim was found with a neck wound from a white‑blade weapon. The investigation remains open, and the broader debate on preventing gender‑based violence during the summer months has intensified across the country.
