Almyros residents demand investigation into marine pollution

Residents of Agioi Apostoloi and Leichoura in the Almyros municipality are demanding immediate investigations and seawater sampling following recurring instances of suspected marine pollution in the Pteleos–Achilleio gulf.

In a formal letter sent to the Amaliapoli and Volos Port Authorities, as well as the Thessaly Region, locals reported intense foaming, water turbidity, and unpleasant odors. The phenomenon is reportedly observed primarily during morning hours in the summer and coincides with the departure of vessels traveling from Achilleio to Skiathos and Skopelos.

Spokesperson Konstantinos Routsias stated that while authorities initially suggested the issue might be a natural phenomenon related to plankton, residents argue the timing suggests a link to ship departures. Residents are calling for on-site inspections and laboratory testing to provide a definitive answer regarding the cause of the pollution.
