Alpaca husbandry: Herd size and shelter requirements

Alpacas are social herd animals that require specific management practices to ensure their well-being. Maintaining a minimum herd size of three is recommended to provide a stable social dynamic, reduce stress, and prevent dominance hierarchies or bullying that can occur in smaller groups.

Regarding nighttime care, while it may not be strictly necessary to lock alpacas up every night, providing secure shelter is essential. Shelters protect the animals from predators and extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, and wind, contributing to their overall safety and health.
