Alpamayo avalanche in Peru leaves three rescued, three missing

An avalanche struck climbers descending the Alpamayo peak in the Cordillera Blanca of the Ancash region, Peru. Three mountaineers survived: Mexican tourist Claudia Moreno, a Peruvian porter who suffered a broken clavicle, and a mountain guide from Arequipa who incurred severe injuries. They were evacuated to medical facilities in Huaraz.

Search operations for three other climbers who have been missing for more than two weeks have been halted because of deteriorating weather and a shortage of guides and porters. Their families are seeking international assistance to fund equipment and resume the search before the survival window closes.
