Alpha Bionic develops humanoid robot that plays soccer using vision
Alpha Bionic has developed a humanoid robot capable of playing soccer using only visual information from its cameras. The research, published in Science Robotics, introduces an integrated approach to robotics by connecting perception and movement within a single controller based on reinforcement learning.
Unlike traditional robotic systems that use a modular chain—where separate components handle detection, positioning, and planning—this new method reduces errors and delays that can occur between stages. To prepare the robot for real-world environments, the AI was trained in simulations that include virtual perception issues such as camera noise, detection errors, and incomplete observations. This allows the robot to act effectively even when visual information is imperfect.
