Alpha Epsilon Pi leaders arrested in Wisconsin hazing investigation
Madison police arrested two leaders of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity following a suspected hazing incident near the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Officers responded to an anonymous tip on Wednesday night and discovered approximately 30 young men, most of whom were 18 years old, in a sweltering and filthy basement.
The pledges were found partially clothed and covered in food, condiments, and other liquids. Police reported that the thermostat had been set to 81 degrees Fahrenheit, creating hot and humid conditions. Several individuals exhibited visible injuries that authorities noted were consistent with physical assault.
Brayden J. Klein, 20, the fraternity president, and Samuel N. Vane, 20, the vice president, were arrested on misdemeanor charges of hazing and disorderly conduct. While the local chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi has not been recognized by the university since 2015, the organization continues to operate through its national headquarters.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is conducting its own investigation into the matter. The national Alpha Epsilon Pi organization stated it is taking the allegations ‘extremely seriously’ and will cooperate with authorities, noting that any member found responsible will be expelled.
