Alpha Phi sorority at UC Santa Barbara faces racism allegations
The Alpha Phi sorority chapter at the University of California, Santa Barbara is facing intense scrutiny following allegations of widespread racism during its fall recruitment season. The controversy has led to internal unrest, including walkouts by active members protesting the treatment of women of color.
Online backlash has intensified on the platform GreekRank, where the chapter received numerous one-star reviews. Anonymous reviewers have warned prospective recruits to avoid the organization, describing a hostile environment. Allegations suggest that many minority candidates were removed from consideration during the selection process, while current members of color were reportedly sidelined from key responsibilities.
The dispute reportedly escalated after an outside recruitment adviser, working with Alpha Phi International, allegedly took control of the selection process without the knowledge of chapter members. Following a round of cuts in late September, the pool of potential recruits reportedly dropped from approximately 1,200 to 250.
