Alpha Phi sorority at UCSB faces allegations of racial exclusion
Members of the Alpha Phi sorority at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have accused an outside recruitment adviser of systematically sidelining women of color during the fall recruitment process.
During the late September rush, approximately 1,200 prospective members initially participated. However, after the first round on September 26, members were reportedly instructed to leave the house while three representatives from Alpha Phi International determined which candidates would advance. Upon their return, the pool of candidates had reportedly dropped to roughly 250 women, with members noting a significant absence of diverse candidates.
Chapter president Alana Nielsen told the Daily Nexus that the exclusion was noticeable to the membership. Student Sky Achola reported being entirely removed from the recruitment schedule. The incident has led to internal confrontations and significant social media backlash on the UCSB campus.
