Alpha Roost Farms expands ostrich production for red meat allergy sufferers
In Danville, Kentucky, Alpha Roost Farms is expanding its ostrich herd to meet rising demand from individuals suffering from alpha-gal syndrome. This condition, a life-threatening allergy to red meat triggered by tick bites, causes symptoms such as hives and diarrhea when consuming beef or pork, but does not affect poultry or ostrich meat.
Brent Williams, a nutritionist and partner at the farm, started the business due to his own diagnosis. Because ostrich meat is red, high in iron, and possesses a flavor profile similar to beef, it serves as a viable alternative for those unable to eat traditional red meats. The farm currently manages over 400 birds and plans to increase that number to 700 by next year.
Owner W. D. King noted that the interest from those with alpha-gal is a primary driver for the business. Due to high demand, ground ostrich can cost more than $20 per pound, with premium cuts exceeding $40.
