Alphabet’s DeepMind dissolves AlphaFold team, pivots to Gemini
Alphabet’s DeepMind division has disbanded the team that created AlphaFold, the AI system that earned the 2024 Chemistry Nobel Prize for solving the protein‑folding problem. The move is part of a broader strategic shift toward the Gemini large‑language model and other general‑purpose AI initiatives.
Most of the original authors of the AlphaFold papers have been reassigned to Gemini‑related projects, enzyme design, nuclear‑fusion research and genomics, while a minority have joined Alphabet’s drug‑discovery subsidiary Isomorphic Labs. Approximately a quarter of the full‑time AlphaFold authors have left DeepMind altogether, including lead scientist John Jumper, who moved to rival Anthropic.
The AlphaFold protein‑structure database and existing licensing agreements remain in place, ensuring continued access for researchers worldwide. Pushmeet Kohli, DeepMind’s vice‑president of research, said the company is evolving from dedicated, single‑problem teams to Gemini‑based systems that can support a broad range of scientific work.
