Alphabet raises $85 billion in share sale to fund AI infrastructure expansion
Alphabet announced the largest-ever single‑share sale, raising $85 billion in two tranches to finance a multi‑year AI infrastructure build‑out. The first tranche was oversubscribed, prompting the company to increase it to $45 billion, with Berkshire Hathaway purchasing $10 billion. A second $40 billion tranche is slated for the fall of 2026, bringing total capital raised to $85 billion.
The proceeds will support Alphabet’s planned 2026 capital expenditure of $180‑$190 billion, primarily for AI‑focused data centers and cloud services. This move aligns with a broader industry push, as the four major hyperscalers—Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta—are collectively targeting about $725 billion in AI infrastructure investment through 2026.
Alphabet’s CEO Sundar Pichai described the fundraising as a “multi‑year investment strategy to meet the AI opportunity ahead,” underscoring the company’s intent to scale computing capacity to meet surging demand for AI solutions worldwide.
