Alphabet to fund nuclear capacity upgrades in Georgia for AI power
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has reached an agreement with Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, to fund capacity upgrades at two existing nuclear power plants: Vogtle and Hatch. The initiative aims to add approximately 96 MW of power generation capacity to meet the surging electricity demands of artificial intelligence data centers.
The upgrades will involve replacing mechanical equipment and improving existing systems to increase the power output of the nuclear reactors. While Vogtle units 3 and 4 recently entered commercial operation, this specific funding targets upgrades for the existing units 1 and 2.
This move reflects a growing trend among major technology firms to secure reliable, low-carbon energy. By providing direct capital for infrastructure improvements, companies like Alphabet are attempting to bypass the delays associated with building new power plants. Google will utilize a new rate mechanism to cover these upgrade costs, intended to prevent the financial burden from being passed on to residential and other industrial utility customers.
