Big Tech AI spending surge drives massive infrastructure investment

Major technology companies are engaging in a massive capital expenditure race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure. Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet are projected to spend a combined $750 billion on capital expenditures in 2026 to support AI demand.

Alphabet has indicated it will significantly increase spending, with projections suggesting roughly $200 billion will be directed toward AI capacity in 2026. This aggressive investment has impacted Alphabet's cash flow, leading to negative free cash flow in recent quarters. Similarly, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged committing between $100 billion and $200 billion to AI infrastructure, despite acknowledging the inherent uncertainty regarding the immediate profitability of these products.

This spending boom is driving up costs for essential resources, including land, labor, electricity, and materials like copper and steel. While the investment creates opportunities for the semiconductor and energy sectors, research firm Gartner warns of potential financial risks. Gartner estimates that AI providers could face significant write-downs by 2030 if the projected $7 trillion in infrastructure spending between 2026 and 2030 is not met by sufficient enterprise and consumer AI revenue.
