Alphabet's $94 Billion Investment Secures Stake in SpaceX

Alphabet disclosed a $94.1 billion investment in SpaceX in its second‑quarter SEC filing, representing roughly a 5 % ownership stake. About $80 billion of the shares are under short‑term restrictions and cannot be sold until the third quarter of 2027, with the remaining $14.1 billion locked up for a longer period.

The investment builds on a decade‑long partnership that began with a $1 billion funding round in 2015 alongside Fidelity. Alphabet now pays SpaceX $920 million each month for AI‑computing infrastructure, securing access to more than 110,000 Nvidia GPUs through 2029. The deal also strengthens ties in cloud services, satellite networking (Starlink) and artificial‑intelligence projects.

Alphabet reported unrealized gains of roughly $98‑99 billion from the SpaceX holding in the second quarter, highlighting the market impact of the private‑sector stake and spurring heightened investor interest in the newly public space‑flight company.
