Alpharetta approves redevelopment of North Point Mall for NHL-focused district

The Alpharetta City Council has approved a 4-3 zoning change to redevelop the North Point Mall into a massive mixed-use entertainment district. The project, proposed by developer Jamestown LP, aims to transform the roughly 100-acre property into a hub featuring a 20,000-seat arena, a music venue, retail shops, restaurants, a hotel, and more than 1,300 apartments.

A primary goal of the redevelopment is to attract a National Hockey League (NHL) franchise. While the league has made no formal commitment to the Atlanta area, the planning commission has set conditions stating that an NHL franchise must be awarded to the site before residents can occupy the planned apartments.

The decision followed a marathon meeting involving over six hours of debate and public comment. While some residents expressed concerns regarding project density and parking, Mayor Jim Gilvin cast the deciding vote to ensure the project moves forward. City officials noted that even if a professional hockey team does not arrive, the city remains committed to the revitalization of the aging mall property.
